How it works

Calculate your material requirement

Calculate tile square footage, waste allowance, square meters, and boxes for floors, walls, and repeated rectangular areas.

The formula

Tile to purchase = length × width × quantity × (1 + waste percentage). Boxes = adjusted tile area ÷ coverage per box, rounded up.

Worked example

A 12 ft × 10 ft floor contains 120 ft². With 10% for cuts and waste, purchase at least 132 ft², or 9 boxes that cover 15 ft² each.

Before you order

  • Diagonal layouts and large-format tile may require a larger allowance.
  • Calculate walls, niches, and floors as separate rectangles, then add them.
  • Keep extra matching tile for future repairs when practical.

Common questions

Tile Square Footage Calculator FAQ

How much extra tile should I buy?

Ten percent is common for simple straight layouts; complex patterns, fragile products, and many cuts may require more.

Should I subtract cabinets or fixtures?

Large permanent areas may be subtracted, but leaving some allowance often helps with cuts and repairs.

Why round boxes up?

Tile is sold in whole boxes, and partial box availability varies by retailer.
