How it works

Calculate your material requirement

Calculate gravel cubic yards, tons, and material cost for a driveway using depth, density, local price, and delivery.

The formula

Tons = adjusted driveway volume in cubic yards × gravel density. Cost = tons × price per ton + delivery charge.

Worked example

A 60 ft × 12 ft driveway with 4 in of gravel needs about 9.78 yd³ after a 10% allowance, or about 13.7 tons at 1.4 tons per cubic yard.

Before you order

  • A durable driveway usually uses separate base and surface layers.
  • Ask whether supplier pricing and delivery have minimum quantities.
  • Excavation, geotextile, grading, compaction, drainage, and labor are separate.

Common questions

Gravel Driveway Calculator FAQ

How deep should a gravel driveway be?

Total depth varies with soil, drainage, traffic, and layer design. New driveways often need multiple compacted layers rather than one surface layer.

How many tons of gravel fit in a dump truck?

Payload varies by truck and local weight limits. Confirm capacity and delivery minimums with the supplier.

Does this include compaction?

The adjustable allowance helps with uncertainty, but compacted yield varies by aggregate and equipment. Supplier guidance should control the order.
